Archaic Greek lyric presents a lively interaction between the lyrical ego, the performance context, the audience and the social function of a poetry composed for performance. The identity of the group is also affirmed by the content of the performance, which conveys and strengthens shared cultural and ideological traits. Within this framework, the landscape is not a contingent element nor a simple means of poetic colouring. An analysis of night landscapes in archaic Greek lyric - especially in Alcman and Sappho – shows how they are experienced in a specific way, privileging the perception of sight phenomena, such as the light projected by the moon and the stars, and acoustic elements. This perception acts as an identity marker within the socio-cultural dynamics of the group involved in the performance, since it highlights and reinforces the feeling of belonging to a social dimension, both at the level of the performance itself and from a cultural and ideological point of view.
