The essay critically analyzes the thesis of the decline of war, highlighting its limitations and showing how the recent Russian-Ukrainian conflict has challenged some deep-rooted beliefs (such as that of the obsolescence of war between great powers) and has come to be characterized as a conflict in which aspects reminiscent of the traditional wars of the past coexist with aspects typical of the “new wars” and with others that, in some ways, foreshadow the wars of the future.

Abstract

The essay critically analyzes the thesis of the decline of war, highlighting its limitations and showing how the recent Russian-Ukrainian conflict has challenged some deep-rooted beliefs (such as that of the obsolescence of war between great powers) and has come to be characterized as a conflict in which aspects reminiscent of the traditional wars of the past coexist with aspects typical of the “new wars” and with others that, in some ways, foreshadow the wars of the future.
