This essay deals with the analysis of Atlas, the mythological figure who held the world on his shoulder, and the atlas, the first vertebra holding the human head up, which represent an interesting case of parasynonymy (Eco 2012). Combining a senso–motorial and neurophysiological approach, with a semiotic and humanistic approach, we prospect a cartography of the mythical figure of Atlas, exploring both its origins and its iconographies.

Abstract

This essay deals with the analysis of Atlas, the mythological figure who held the world on his shoulder, and the atlas, the first vertebra holding the human head up, which represent an interesting case of parasynonymy (Eco 2012). Combining a senso–motorial and neurophysiological approach, with a semiotic and humanistic approach, we prospect a cartography of the mythical figure of Atlas, exploring both its origins and its iconographies.
