The present paper analyses several cinematographic works displaying the relationship between urban context and catastrophic events. The catastrophe is understood as a metaphysical force that impacts in the spatio-temporal fabric of the city; it is both a destructive force and a reshaping force. Several neo-Platonic categories are used in this analysis, moreover reference is made to the thought of Simone Weil and Ernst Juenger. The concepts of catastrophe, distance, labor, reading, technology, and elementary principle are employed in the analysis of movies by Fritz Lang, Stanley Kubrick, George Romero and Michelangelo Antonioni.
