The approach of microvariation has been fruitfully used to study diverse linguistic phenomena, from phonology to syntax, but its potential has not often been exploited for the study of social meaning. Here, we apply this methodological approach to the study of the social meaning of variable liaison in France and Québec in order to probe the source of meanings of realised variable liaison that have been proposed in the literature. Using an experimental test based on the matched guise task, we replicate an effect described in a recent study with a new sample of speakers of Metropolitan French. However, we do not find the same preferences with speakers of Laurentian French. We discuss the differences we observe and propose some questions that should be addressed in future work.
