The city, in terms of urban planning and architecture, found a strong impetus in the utopias that developed during the humanistic-Renaissance tradition. Today, this ideal finds its limit in the “city of destruction” evoked by the dystopian literature of such authors as Paul Auster and Cormac McCarthy. In their narratives, the impact of today’s ecological crisis on the balance of human habitation emerges powerfully, torn, as it is, between a history that is untethered from any biological basis, and a nature that is degraded to mere garbage. Through the rereading of some aspects of Leonardo da Vinci’s work, we will then ask what kind of city best corresponds to this unprecedented challenge and what is the new model of balance to aspire to in an urban context that has a future.

Abstract
The city, in terms of urban planning and architecture, found a strong impetus in the utopias that developed during the humanistic-Renaissance tradition. Today, this ideal finds its limit in the “city of destruction” evoked by the dystopian literature of such authors as Paul Auster and Cormac McCarthy. In their narratives, the impact of today’s ecological crisis on the balance of human habitation emerges powerfully, torn, as it is, between a history that is untethered from any biological basis, and a nature that is degraded to mere garbage. Through the rereading of some aspects of Leonardo da Vinci’s work, we will then ask what kind of city best corresponds to this unprecedented challenge and what is the new model of balance to aspire to in an urban context that has a future.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
