El mal querer by Rosalía: urban flamenco and millenial feminism. A free interpretation of an anonymous 13th-century Occitan manuscript recounting a story of love and jealousy, El mal querer (2018) is a concept album that narrates a contemporary ‘toxic relationship’ in eleven tracks. The author of the project is the young Catalan artist Rosalía, an internationally acclaimed pop icon, who pays homage in this work to the ancient art of flamenco, mixing musical genres and new sounds: the result is the proposal of an unusual Iberian identity that, through provocative experimentation and original hybridisation, obeys the expressive laws of today’s youth language. In fact, Rosalía’s daring and countercultural aesthetics, which fuse spirituality and urban reverberations, flamenco duende and feminism in an unprecedented code, have successfully brought the new generations closer to the spirit and strength of traditional popular music by upsetting its rules.
