Coin-operated doors and pirated toasts: reflections on capitalism from Philip K. Dick’s Ubik to Cory Doctorow’s Unauthorized Bread

This essay explores how Philip K. Dick’s Ubik and Cory Doctorow’s Unauthorized Bread depict a critique of their economic milieus, the former satirizing the power of the product in traditional capitalism, and the latter tackling the obsession with services of contemporary capitalism. In juxtaposing the texts, I argue that Doctorow is indebted to Dick for his use of irony and satire, but offers a much deeper critique than Dick, whose attack on capitalism falls short of offering a potential solution to its ills.
