The biopics – which have experienced great success in recent years, both in Italian and international cinema – are faced by actors and actresses as a peculiar, potentially risky, and certainly challenging testing ground. This scenario gets even more complex when it comes to biopics dedicated to well-known personalities of political history that can pose a further threat: that of embodying a figure that already exists (or has existed) mediatically. The essay investigates the acting contributions of actors who, over the last twenty years, have embodied political personalities from the recent or distant past of Italian republican history on the big screen. Moving from speci4c case studies – Toni Servillo’s ‘versions’ of Andreotti and Berlusconi, Pierfrancesco Favino’s Craxi and Fabrizio Gifuni’s Moro –, the essay considers not only their contribution in terms of acting, but the overall sense that technique, style, physical presence, and star personality of these actors brought to the flms, and how this sense possibly contributed to rethink, or at least reconsider, these ‘biographed’ political figures.

Abstract
The biopics – which have experienced great success in recent years, both in Italian and international cinema – are faced by actors and actresses as a peculiar, potentially risky, and certainly challenging testing ground. This scenario gets even more complex when it comes to biopics dedicated to well-known personalities of political history that can pose a further threat: that of embodying a figure that already exists (or has existed) mediatically. The essay investigates the acting contributions of actors who, over the last twenty years, have embodied political personalities from the recent or distant past of Italian republican history on the big screen. Moving from speci4c case studies – Toni Servillo’s ‘versions’ of Andreotti and Berlusconi, Pierfrancesco Favino’s Craxi and Fabrizio Gifuni’s Moro –, the essay considers not only their contribution in terms of acting, but the overall sense that technique, style, physical presence, and star personality of these actors brought to the flms, and how this sense possibly contributed to rethink, or at least reconsider, these ‘biographed’ political figures.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
