Body image is a salient aspect of adolescents’ self-concept, and a more positive perception of one’s body image is associated with better psychological adjustment. In this article, after defining the terms body image, body dissatisfaction, and positive body image, the main theoretical frameworks that dominate scientific research in this area are summarized, as well as the risk factors and consequences associated with body dissatisfaction in adolescents. Finally, the role of schools in promoting effective prevention and intervention strategies is discussed.
