La dimensione dell’abitare e le coordinate del tragico nelle "Affinità elettive" di Goethe

Il romanzo di Goethe Le affinità elettive (Die Wahlverwandtschaften, 1809) sviluppa una situazione tragica intorno a una concezione di destino che, pur in continuità con le forme dell’antico e con la riflessione dell’autore su di esse, si confronta con forme e simboli che caratterizzano il pensiero romantico e moderno, dalla teoria chimica delle “combinazioni” e delle “affinità”, esposta nel capitolo IV, alle modalità di abitare e di trasformare lo spazio. Il rapporto tra intreccio e destino, e tra desiderio e disegno (anche inteso come progettazione degli spazi architettonici e naturali, Baukunst e Gartenkunst), in particolare, si delinea misteriosamente tra una visione classica e religiosa da una parte, che porrebbe i personaggi in balía di forze necessitanti e imperscrutabili, e un senso più laico e disincantato di una determinazione degli eventi legata alle passioni e alla natura. Sulla base di un aggiornamento teorico e critico, questo saggio intende dimostrare come la morfologia e la poetica dello spazio nel romanzo e, nello specifico, la dimensione privata dell’abitare contribuiscano alla trasformazione delle coordinate del tragico nella rappresentazione dell’esistenza. W.J. Goethe’s Elective Affinities (Die Wahlverwandtschaften, 1809) develops a tragic situation around a conception of fate which, although in continuity with the ancient forms and with the author’s theory and practice of tragedy, deals with the Romantic thought and with modern philosophy, from the chemical theory of the “affinities” as narrated in chapter IV, to the form of dwelling and transforming the space. The relationship between plot and fate, and between desire and design (this latter as conceived as architectural design too, as Baukunst und Gartenkunst), is mysteriously carried out on the one hand within a classical and religious system of values that place the characters at the mercy of necessity or chance; and, on the other, within a more modern and disenchanted context linked to passions and nature. Starting from a theoretical and critical overview, the essay aims to demonstrate how in the novel the morphology and the poetics of the space and, more precisely, the private dimen-sion of dwelling contribute to developing the philosophy of tragedy as a representation of the existence.
