Although Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a global phenomenon, the importance of its situatedness within diverse cultural contexts is often overlooked. This opinion piece stresses the importance of acknowledging cultural differences in AI interactions and the implications for technological development and user engagement worldwide. Regulations informed by cultural awareness can bridge disparities between the Global North and South, and approaches that carefully situate data in culture can lead to more sustainable and resilient technologies. Ultimately, a perspective that is more sensitive to the cultural contexts within which AI technologies are developed, circulated, and used will enhance not only fairness but also efficiency in the development, regulation, and implementation of AI technologies.
