Verbal voice concerns the way in which changes in the mapping of semantic roles onto syntactic categories are marked on the verb. Typical voices include, for example, the passive and the causative. This chapter explores the diachronic development of verbal voice, focusing on the variety of lexical sources that may grammaticalize into voice markers. It also considers the phenomenon of voice syncretism, examining the historical relationships among different diatheses and challenging traditional views concerning the directionality of secondary grammaticalization within the voice domain.

Abstract
Verbal voice concerns the way in which changes in the mapping of semantic roles onto syntactic categories are marked on the verb. Typical voices include, for example, the passive and the causative. This chapter explores the diachronic development of verbal voice, focusing on the variety of lexical sources that may grammaticalize into voice markers. It also considers the phenomenon of voice syncretism, examining the historical relationships among different diatheses and challenging traditional views concerning the directionality of secondary grammaticalization within the voice domain.File in questo prodotto:
