According to the neo-cognitivist account, literature’s cognitive import has to do with understanding, conceptual reorganization, and the ability to change one’s perspective. By examining in detail Kafka’s Metamorphosis on the one hand and Carver’s and Gallaghers’ stories on the other, we will offer arguments in favor of the thesis that literature’s specific cognitive value is essentially perspectival in nature.
