This article examines Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica as a case study through which to explore the relationship between Catholic theology, canon law and contemporary legal debates on suicide. By analysing the opera’s plot, historical context and reception, the contribution shows how Puccini transformed a subject traditionally condemned by ecclesiastical doctrine into a reflection on compassion, mercy and human suffering. The study retraces the evolution of the Catholic Church’s position on suicide, from its strict prohibition in theological and canonical tradition to a more nuanced approach that acknowledges mitigating psychological circumstances. It also situates the opera within current discussions on assisted suicide and end-of-life issues in Italy, with particular reference to recent constitutional case law. The article argues that Suor Angelica demonstrates the capacity of art to mediate between legal norms, theological principles and lived experience, offering a space in which justice, mercy and human dignity can be reconsidered in dialogue with one another.
