This study analyses the digital transformation of examination processes at the University of Turin, tracing the shift from paper-based constraints to an e-testing system based on Moodle and Safe Exam Browser (SEB). To tackle the evolving challenges of the Higher Education Area (HEA), the project overcomes the physical limitations of traditional computer labs through the large-scale implementation of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Computer Lab Based (CLB) models. The study details a multi-phase evolutionary plan (2024–2026), analysing how adaptive network infrastructures — including the deployment of more than 23 high-density Wi-Fi access points — and specific security plug-ins ensure academic integrity at scale. Central to this transition is a Lifelong Learning strategy, developed in collaboration with the University’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) and IT Systems, Website Management, E-Learning Division. This strategy focuses on a Faculty Development programme delivered through asynchronous Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Open Badges to certify the digital competencies of both faculty and students. The goal is to provide accessible, standardised training that can bridge the digital divide and prevent technological exclusion for all participants. By examining exam volume data and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) updated to 2026 — including more than 2,000 student and 50 professor MOOC enrolments, more than 1,500 student and 30 professor Open Badge certifications, and a fourfold increase in CLB exam volumes within the first two months of the 2025/2026 academic year — this paper demonstrates how the integration between Educational Technology, Education, and Research creates a sustainable, environmentally responsible, and replicable model. The findings suggest that this project is a scalable model for e-assessment governance in higher education, offering key insights into mitigating risks associated with Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) while supporting institutional digital citizenship and consistent teaching standards. The proposed model provides a framework for large-scale institutions seeking to modernise assessment strategies, strengthen Faculty Development, and promote digital equity through IT and Lifelong Learning initiatives
