Abductions and Forced Marriages in Ancient Greece: The Myth of Persephone Among the many cases of gender-based violence in antiquity preserved through Greek mythology, the abduction of Persephone, daughter of the goddess Demeter, by Hades, god of the Underworld, is undoubtedly one of the best known and most compelling. In this podcast, we will recount the myth through the lens of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, a poem attributed to Homer and generally dated to the seventh or sixth century BCE. Through this narrative, we will explore how the study of the past can serve as an essential tool for understanding phenomena that remain deeply relevant today, such as the physical and psychological violence inflicted upon women.
