In the Praefatio in Euangelium, with reference to the textual corruption of the manuscript witnesses of the Gospels, Jerome employs an expression that closely echoes a passage of Origen’s Commentary on Matthew. A careful examination of the wider context shows that, in undertaking his translation of Scripture, Jerome consciously draws upon Origen’s authority and presents himself as following in his predecessor’s footsteps. At the same time, he adapts Origen’s language to a different historical and intellectual setting and develops positions that are distinctly his own.

Abstract
In the Praefatio in Euangelium, with reference to the textual corruption of the manuscript witnesses of the Gospels, Jerome employs an expression that closely echoes a passage of Origen’s Commentary on Matthew. A careful examination of the wider context shows that, in undertaking his translation of Scripture, Jerome consciously draws upon Origen’s authority and presents himself as following in his predecessor’s footsteps. At the same time, he adapts Origen’s language to a different historical and intellectual setting and develops positions that are distinctly his own.File in questo prodotto:
