Summer Royal table grape variety, developed by S. Badr and D. Ramming in California, has been officially introduced in Italy for experimental purpose, at the end of the ’90s, in order to test its suitability to be grown under the environmental conditions of the main Italian table grape growing area, that is, the Apulia region (Southern Italy). In Southern Italy, covering table grapes with plastic films is a popular practice aiming to advance berry ripening or to delay grape harvesting. We call these two type of covering as ‘early covering’ or ‘late covering’, respectively (de Palma et al. 2002; de Palma et al., 2004; Novello and de Palma, 2006). The early maturing varieties, especially the seedless one, are commonly ‘early covered’ since, in the Apulia region, this technique has also proved to improve berry size and quality (Novello et al., 1998; Novello et al., 2000; Tarricone, 2003). The earlier the date of covering, the earlier the date of ripening; however, a too early covering may be dangerous in case of a late chilling, since the plastic film typically induces a thermal inversion inside the confined ambient. First results of Summer Royal in Italy were promising, and showed this cultivar as early ripening and as a possible candidate for the ‘early covering’ (Tarricone and de Palma, 2003). Hence, we continued the investigation with two aims: studying on depth the vegetative and reproductive performance of Summer Royal in Southern Italy, and starting to examine its performance under ‘early covering’.
