The use of Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) techniques for the performance evaluation ef computer/communication systems has attracted the interest of several research groups in the last few years. The goal of this paper is to discuss the advantages inherent in the use of SPN as a tool for the performance evaluation of distributed systems, to describe the present fields of investigation, to point out several interesting problems still open for research, and to emphasize the applied mathematics aspects of the solution of the models, First, SPN models are briefly introduced, then the above topics are illustrated by means of examples.

Abstract

The use of Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) techniques for the performance evaluation ef computer/communication systems has attracted the interest of several research groups in the last few years. The goal of this paper is to discuss the advantages inherent in the use of SPN as a tool for the performance evaluation of distributed systems, to describe the present fields of investigation, to point out several interesting problems still open for research, and to emphasize the applied mathematics aspects of the solution of the models, First, SPN models are briefly introduced, then the above topics are illustrated by means of examples.
