Statins are widely used in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, but they carry a risk of adverse muscle side effects, partly related to the decrease of coenzyme Q10. Chinese red rice (cholestatin) is a natural statin with apparent similar effects. What this study adds Chinese red rice reduced coenzyme Q10 in muscle tissue and mantained muscle damage in one patient previously treated with statins; it can not be considered an alternative therapy when statins are controindicated.

Abstract
Statins are widely used in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, but they carry a risk of adverse muscle side effects, partly related to the decrease of coenzyme Q10. Chinese red rice (cholestatin) is a natural statin with apparent similar effects. What this study adds Chinese red rice reduced coenzyme Q10 in muscle tissue and mantained muscle damage in one patient previously treated with statins; it can not be considered an alternative therapy when statins are controindicated.File in questo prodotto:
