The authors described the histopathological lesions observed in 352 brains of pigs regularly slaughtered in different slautherhouses of Piemonte and Lombardia. Focal or disseminated perivascular cuffings are the most important observed lesions. Arteries degenerations and malformative cysts are the other important lesions observed too. No specific lesions indicative of TSE infections were observed. The immunohistochemistry performed using Aujeszky virus specific monoclonal antibody on cerebral sections with diffuse or disseminated mononuclear encephalitis was negative. Asymptomatic infections or aspecific reactions are investigated as possible causes of non suppurative inflammations.
