The role played by secretory antibodies in conferring protection against infectious agents is well established, and it has been demonstrated that IgA is the most important immunoglobulin in this respect. Purified bacterial extracts have been found to have an immunomodulating activity, able to enhance both the specific and the non-specific response. A freeze-dried bacterial lysate from eight bacterial species has appeared in recent years: Bronchovaxom® (B.V.). Aim of this study was to analyze the effect of B.V. on SIgA production in recurrent chronic bronchitis patients. All cases showed significant IgA increase after administration of B.V. We conclude that immunostimulating lysates from bacteria are valid approach in prevention and treatment of recurrent chronic bronchitis alone or together antibiotic therapy.
