In our advanced society any production process is obliged to respect the sustainability principle, which means to comply with the economical soundness, quality of the product, safety of the workers and environmental safety requirements. The sector of mobility needs a special attention towards the environment, requiring major efforts to companies of infrastructures sector. In particular, in the tunnelling excavation two very important aspects are to take into account: the dumping of the excavated material and the opening of new quarries for the supplying of raw materials. A very interesting solution that can be proposed to minimize these relevant environmental problems is the recycling or reusing of the muck from tunnel excavation to be employed as aggregate for concrete, for bituminous conglomerate, for road construction, or for raw material for the industry. However, it is necessary that the recycling or the reusing of muck from tunnel excavation takes into account that in the material excavated could be present noxious materials, dangerous for the environment and workers that handle them. The study proposed in this project is therefore essentially aimed to the development and turning of innovative methods to face the problems posed by waste muck disposal and to optimise the management of waste recycling, making economically advantages on the reuse of excavation waste materials. In general the final objectives of this study can be resumed in the following two points: • to develop new techniques to reuse the tunnel excavation waste instead of dumping, through the production, of useful materials for road and railway embankments, concrete aggregates, bituminous aggregates, road paving materials, or even industrial mineral for different production fields; • to analyse in detail the integrated system of excavation waste management and to indicate the elements to be optimised for an eco-compatible and economic advantageous exploitation of the waste or raw material for aggregates, embankments and so on, or for the production of marketable industrial minerals. The research activity will developed by the Proposers (Politecnico di Torino, DITAG, DISTR and DITIC Departments) in co-operation with two private and public association (GEAM and the Dipartimento di Traumatologia, Ortopedia e Medicina del Lavoro of the University of Torino), with a SME (RADIS CESARE srl) and with two big Enterprices (CO.GE.FA. S.p.A. and BUZZI UNICEM). Each participant has specific roles in the project to the aim of reaching the common objectives. The results of the research project will be send to all the SMEs and big Companies located in the Piemonte region, that could be interested in the recycling of muck from tunnel excavation, for productive scope, in respect to the sustainability principle. The results of the research will be published in scientific and technical papers and in a special book, both at a national and international level, in order to contribute to the scientific and technologic development in the research field of sustainability mobility.
