The effect of eight essential oils derived from the Citrus fruit processing (Citrus limon (L.) Burm. f. cv. “Femminello”, Citrus sinensis (L.) cv. “Sanguinello”and Citrus reticulata Ten. cv. “Avana”) on growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis and mycetes was reported. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by standard methods - disc diffusion test and broth microdilution method - as well as vapour contact assay. Among the compounds examined, Citrus limon exhibited the best results against Gram positive bacteria and mycetes, having the largest inhibitory zone (15-30 diameters in mm) and the best minimum inhibitory concentration (0.5-1% v/v in liquid state and 0.03-0.25 % v/v in vapour phase). Citrus sinensis and Citrus reticulata oils, did not show antibacterial activity at the highest concentration tested (1%, v/v). However, when assayed as volatiles, determined inhibition of Aspergillus niger growth verified by reduction of colony diameter as compared with control; at the concentration of 0.5 % (v/v) a growth reduction of approximatively 60% was observed.
