The lecture intends to analyze the ways, the instruments and the approaches through which the International Community has been facing the question of peace and international security, from the establishment of the United Nations (1945) to the end of the cold war, from a historical perspective. Recalling the main international crises that have involved the United Nations, the lecture means to show how the evolution of the international system and of great powers relations has been influencing the reactions of the International Community, its successes and its (more frequent) failures. This exercise allows to argue about the limits of the United Nations as well as of the reactions of the International Community to war, and then obout how to reform them to reach a just and peaceful world order.
