In the Verbano lake area (46° 1' 26.04" N; 8° 41' 13.92" E), thanks to a favourable microclimate, the citrus culture has a great historic tradition, dating since the XVII century. The culture was introduced into the area from Tuscany and Ligury and many old citrus trees, propagated by grafting and budding during the last hundred years, are grown. The safeguard of the local germplasm and the conservation of the biodiversity, in order to reduce the genetic erosion, is fundamental and the citrus trees of the Verbano area are a living witness and a precious germplasm to be maitained in an active way. By moving from passive conservation methods to a concept of active conservation through projects which enforce the re-employment of the genetic resources through exploitation (in orchards or as ornamentals), the qualitative and nutraceutical traits of Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck fruits from 15 accessions (3 accessions of blood/pigmented oranges, 4 accessions of early/mid-season navel and 8 accessions of common oranges) were investigated. Size, juice return, titratable acidity, pH and soluble solids content were determined sampling and analyzing 10 fruit/accession, picked up at the commercial ripening stage. The total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteau method and the antioxidant activity by the FRAP (ferric reducing-antioxidant power) methodology. To analyse the content of vitamin C, of flavanone glycosides (FGs) and of flavonoids in fruit juice (hesperidin, neohesperidin, narirutin, rutin, diosmin) the HPLC method was applyed. Total phenols range from 84.78 to 118.736 mg GAE/100g, the antioxidant activity range from 6.920 to 9.818 mmol/Kg and the vitamin C ranges from 52.01 to 67.67 mg/100 ml. Compared to the latitude of the site, the citrus from Verbano lake area have reasonable qualitative characteristics and good nutraceutical properties.

Abstract
Compared to the latitude of the site, the citrus from Verbano lake area have reasonable qualitative characteristics and good nutraceutical properties.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
