Abstract

The primary purpose of the ALICE experiment is the investigation of Nucleus-Nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. This accelerator will bring heavy-ion physics in a completely unexplored energy regime where ideal conditions for the formation and the study of the Quark Gluon Plasma are expected to be achieved. The general features and the capabilities of the ALICE experiment will be discussed in this paper and the status of the experiment in view of the forthcoming LHC run will be outlined.
