The article critically revises the literature and findings on the relationship between socio-economic development and democratization. Major hypotheses are illustrated and a specific analysis of recent events in the different geopolitical areas of the world is offered. Our findings support the case for a positive relationship. However, exceptions are abundant and the role of crucial intervening variables, social and political, is also discussed and emphasized.

Abstract
