Teaching mathematics deeply involves different factors, both on the part of the teachers and the students. Competencies, beliefs and attitude towards the discipline play a crucial role. Starting from basic considerations on the difficulties that students face when learning mathematics, the paper discusses the potential of language in understanding and solving a given problem. In this perspective, the software PROFenix 2 was properly constructed, in view of providing support for arithmetic problem solving. PROFenix2 provides the teacher easy opportunities for modifying the problem’s text, both as language and data are concerned. For these reasons, the software is a flexible tool in the hands of the teacher, mainly in case of multilingual settings.
