In this study we determined the carriage of β-lactamase genes in 59 Escherichia coli strains isolated from dogs and cats with cystitis in the Turin area (Italy). Positives strains were tested by antimicrobial susceptibility test and characterized for virulence factors and phylogenetic background. A total of 24 (40.7%) E. coli strains carried at least one β-lactamase gene and 18.6% were “Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases” (ESBLs). All positives strains showed phenotypic resistance to several antimicrobials and a wide range of virulence factors was found. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the strains belonged mainly to group B2.

Abstract
In this study we determined the carriage of β-lactamase genes in 59 Escherichia coli strains isolated from dogs and cats with cystitis in the Turin area (Italy). Positives strains were tested by antimicrobial susceptibility test and characterized for virulence factors and phylogenetic background. A total of 24 (40.7%) E. coli strains carried at least one β-lactamase gene and 18.6% were “Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases” (ESBLs). All positives strains showed phenotypic resistance to several antimicrobials and a wide range of virulence factors was found. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the strains belonged mainly to group B2.File in questo prodotto:
