A lot of gastropod species and hermit crabs specimens live associated to Posidonia oceanica leaves. The results, obtained analyzing the two taxa associated with the foliar stratum of two P. oceanica beds off Elba island, show that both gastropods and crabs are sensible to the nycthemeral cycle. In particular, the hermit crabs increase their presence by night, probably as an answer to a lower predatory pressure exerted e.g. by fishes by night.

Abstract

A lot of gastropod species and hermit crabs specimens live associated to Posidonia oceanica leaves. The results, obtained analyzing the two taxa associated with the foliar stratum of two P. oceanica beds off Elba island, show that both gastropods and crabs are sensible to the nycthemeral cycle. In particular, the hermit crabs increase their presence by night, probably as an answer to a lower predatory pressure exerted e.g. by fishes by night.
