Günter Grass novel Der Butt (The Flounder, 1977) is built on the coordinate of various inclinations. Not only the obvious literary forms – narration and poetry – but also the culinary and the visual fields, which the author firsthand practiced. The culinary field defines the novel’s structure, with its nine female cooks and the many food preparations depicted in the novel. The visual inclination is to be found in the many hints in the narration related to the activity as a visual artistof the narrator and of Grass’ himself, who produced a wealth of litographies, engravings, sculptures and drawings regarding the same visual elements of the novel. The Flounder is therefore an enormous reservoir of images.
