Strawberries are highly susceptible to fungal decay, and biocontrol using yeasts offers a promising approach to manage postharvest diseases. This study evaluated antagonistic yeasts for controlling strawberry rots, assessing their efficacy, impact on fruit quality, and influence on the microbiome. Endophytic yeasts were isolated from healthy strawberries and tested alongside yeast strains from the University of Turin’s collection. Metschnikowia pulcherrima and Aureobasidium pullulans were identified as the most effective strains, reducing rot incidence and severity during storage and shelf-life, comparable to a commercial biofungicide. Fruit quality parameters were unaffected, and metabarcoding revealed significant changes in the microbiome due to treatments. These results support the development of sustainable strategies for minimizing postharvest losses while preserving fruit quality.
