The aim of this chapter is to discuss the pivotal role that consumers’ food cooperatives (Food Coops) play in the development of sustainable consumption patterns within alternative agri-food networks. It outlines the ways in which Food Coops have emerged from community-led initiatives that enable consumer empowerment through more ethical sourcing, reduction of waste, and strengthening of local food systems. In these ways, Food Coops are part of larger sustainable development goals and a movement toward food democracy through purchasing bulk products and paying fairly for quality products. The chapter further contextualizes these issues with a historical background, current trends, challenges, and opportunities of Food Coops, and by drawing out the policy implications of supporting their growth. It lastly calls for more research on inclusivity and social justice within Food Coops to place them at the forefront for generations to come in a more sustainable and equitable food future.
