This patent reports a new, general procedure for the production of N,N-dimethyl-N'-arylureas using S,S-dimethyl dithiocarbonate (DMDTC) as a phosgene substitute. The procedure consists of three steps: i) reaction of DMDTC with dimethylamine to give S-methyl N,N-dimethylthiocarbamates; ii) chlorination to give N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl chlorides; iii) reaction with arylamines. All the products were obtained in high yields and with high purity. To be noted is the complete exploitation of the reagent.
