Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) are artificial oligonucleotide mimetics that bind DNA and RNA and are promising tools for gene targeting and nucleic acid sensing. In this work, modified thieno[3,4-d]pyrimidine nucleobases were investigated in PNA chemistry to explore new functional and fluorescent properties, while lipophilic monomers are being developed to improve overall PNA stability.
