This article argues against evolutionary accounts that reduce literature to a form of adaptive storytelling. While storytelling may serve cognitive and social functions, literature is an aesthetic experience marked by opacity, formal complexity, and non-instrumental value – where “aesthetic” denotes experiential engagement with form, ambiguity, and linguistic texture beyond communicative utility. Drawing on philosophers of literature and literary examples, the paper defends the autonomy of the literary from biological explanation.

Abstract

This article argues against evolutionary accounts that reduce literature to a form of adaptive storytelling. While storytelling may serve cognitive and social functions, literature is an aesthetic experience marked by opacity, formal complexity, and non-instrumental value – where “aesthetic” denotes experiential engagement with form, ambiguity, and linguistic texture beyond communicative utility. Drawing on philosophers of literature and literary examples, the paper defends the autonomy of the literary from biological explanation.
