Grape quality and berry skin anthocyanin composition of three ‘Nebbiolo’ clones were evaluated to assess the influence of different environmental conditions on their qualitative performances. The aptitudes of the clones CVT 308, CVT 423 (both ‘Picotener’ biotypes original from Aosta Valley) and CVT CN 142 (‘Lampia’ biotype original from Langhe area) were studied in 2003 (very dry and hot) and in 2004 (standard climatic condition) in two environmentally different locations of North-western Italy: Donnas (Aosta Valley) and Monforte d’Alba (Langhe area, Piedmont). In both years, CVT 423, known as a clone of moderate vigour and low yield, showed higher sugar and anthocyanin contents in Monforte d’Alba on fresh and loamy soil and with a East exposition. On the contrary, CVT CN 142, genotipically characterized by high vigour and a very good productivity, gave the best results in the vineyard of Donnas, where growing conditions were more limiting (lighter and drier soil, sunnier exposition). The CVT 308 performances were intermediate in both locations. The choice of suitable clones when establishing a new vineyard should be focused more on specific environment-genotype interactions than on geographical origin of clones. The trial on ‘Barbera’ cultivar was carried out in 2002 (rainy and cool) and in 2004: the effect of the two growing seasons on grape composition was evaluated on 6 clones of different geographical origin, which were cultivated in the same vineyard located in Monforte d’Alba (CN). The soluble solid content generally differed in the two years. The climatic conditions of the two years significantly affected berry skin anthocyanin and polyphenolic amounts, which were lower in 2002 than in 2004, and the anthocyanin profile.
