Conclusion: Minimal differences of treatment were detected among the patients admitted for the first time vs remaining ones. The choice of the treatment was not related to psychiatric diagnosis, aggressive behavior or occurrence of a first psychiatric admission.

Abstract
Psychotic individuals are five times more likely than general population to commit violent acts 1 and most of thes acts are performed during the first week of neuroleptic treatment. 2. The frequent lack of compliance with drugs makes difficult to find a patient-acceptable therapy. High-potency antipsychotic drugs, e.g. haloperidol, were the most commonly used drugs for the treatment of agitation and aggression in acute psychosis until early 90s 3. It has been argued that an optimization of the managment of these patients requires more attention to their socio-demographic and clinical features. The acute hospital psychiatric ward (AHPW) is the place where these patients are most frequently managed and where new treatments are started. Aims: To eveluate the psychiatric diagnosis, the occurrence of aggressive behavior and the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatmens of patiens admitted to Italian AHPW. Methods: Psychiatric EmeRgency Study and EpidemiOlogy - was an observational study performed in 2472 patients aged ↗ 18 years consecutively enrolled in 62 Italian AHPW. 243 patients were at their first psychiatric admission. Conclusion: Minimal differences of treatment were detected among the patients admitted for the first time vs remaining ones. The choice of the treatment was not related to psychiatric diagnosis, aggressive behavior or occurrence of a first psychiatric admission.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
