While assessing hive strength, it is a common approach to consider the area of the comb occupied by brood and stocks, and the number of adult bees. Traditional evaluating procedures are generally inaccurate, subjective and tricky. This research is aimed at investigating the potentialities of a photogrammetric approach performed on digital images, to improve and make more objective such estimations. This technique is considered an effective tool for the 3D modelling of the beehive and for its complete rigorous geometrical description obtained through stereoscopy. A simplified bi-dimensional processing, based on image warping, is also taken into consideration to define its level of approximation with respect to the 3D one and, eventually, to propose it as an operational tool for technicians working in the field. Image processing techniques are then applied to extract thematic information. In particular supervised/unsupervised classifiers can be applied for comb, brood and stock area mapping. An important step of this research is the design and production of an appropriate transportable tool made of a panel hosting the comb and of a specific support for the two cameras used for image acquisition. Calibrated bars on the panel are used as Ground Control Points during the photogrammetric processing of images, both to determine their exterior orientation and to auto-calibrate the cameras at every acquisition. The camera support has been designed to guarantee a controllable geometry of the acquisition scheme (base/height ratio), mainly for accuracy assessment purposes. This methodology should prove to be more objective than the traditional ones as it allows to operate measurements in a uniform way useful to ensure comparability of the obtained values independently from the context and the operator.
