In recent years technological progress has introduced the widespread use of multidetector computed-tomography (MDCT). The impact of this new technique in the diagnostic process of the acute abdomen in the emergency-department (ED) has not yet been extensively evaluated. Aim of this work is to assess the accuracy of 64-row MDCT in the differential diagnosis of surgical non-traumatic acute abdomen in the ED. We prospectively studied 181 patients admitted to our ED with a diagnosis of acute abdomen, who underwent for clinical reasons MDCT scan followed by surgery. Radiological diagnosis was compared with surgical findings and histological examination.

Abstract
In recent years technological progress has introduced the widespread use of multidetector computed-tomography (MDCT). The impact of this new technique in the diagnostic process of the acute abdomen in the emergency-department (ED) has not yet been extensively evaluated. Aim of this work is to assess the accuracy of 64-row MDCT in the differential diagnosis of surgical non-traumatic acute abdomen in the ED. We prospectively studied 181 patients admitted to our ED with a diagnosis of acute abdomen, who underwent for clinical reasons MDCT scan followed by surgery. Radiological diagnosis was compared with surgical findings and histological examination.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
