This research was aimed at studying the effects of soil solarization on moisture and temperature dynamics and weed seed viability in the soil profile. The study was carried out at a site near Turin (NW Italy) comparing the following treatments: 1) solarization with plastic soil mulching (0.05 mm PE film), under plastic tunnel (0.2 mm EVA film), maintained for 20, 40 and 60 days; 2) solarization with plastic soil mulching (0.05 mm PE film), maintained for 20, 40 and 60 days; 3) bare soil (check). The experiment was replicated in three periods: starting from the beginning of June (period 1), from the beginning of July (period 2) and from the beginning of August (period 3). The results pointed out that soil moisture, which was 14-20% (w/w) at the beginning of the study, remained roughly unchanged during all periods in all solarized plots. Soil temperatures varied according to the conditions of soil cover. Highest temperatures (modal values) were mostly recorded with greater frequency in period 1of solarization. In this period temperatures registered at 2, 7 and 20 cm of soil depth were: 24, 25, 27°C in check plots, 37, 38, 38°C in mulched plots, 43, 45, 45°C in mulched under tunnel plots. Best results in seed viability reduction were obtained after 60 days of solarization with mulching under tunnel. In this condition viability reduction was 67 and 72% in the seeds of 0-10 and 10-20 cm layer, respectively. Chenopodium album, Digitaria sanguinalis and Echinochloa crus-galli resulted the most sensitive species to solarization.
