Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) is a solventless sample preparation technique first proposed by Sandra’s group [1] to extract organic analytes from aqueous samples and then successfully applied to headspace sampling by Tienpont et al. [2] and Bicchi et al. [3], called Headspace Sorptive Extraction (HSSE). SBSE and HSSE are based on the sorption of the analytes onto a thick film of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated on the glass-coated magnet of a stir bar; PDMS stir bars are marketed under the name Twister® (Gerstel, Mülheim a/d Ruhr, Germany). Both SBSE and HSSE have been shown to be very effective in recovering trace components from liquid samples and vapour phase. [3]. The major limit of sorptive extraction is that PDMS (i.e. an apolar phase) is not highly effective to recover polar analytes (i.e. with low Ko/w), making difficult their analysis in complex matrices. New concentration materials are therefore necessary to extend the range of applications of sorptive extraction. A new generation of twisters coated with polyethyleneglycol-modified silicone (PEG) and polyacrylate/polyethyleneglycol (PA) has recently been introduced and successfully applied to whisky, wine and multivitamin juice SBSE sampling [4]. In this study, PEG and PA twisters have been applied to SBSE and HSSE sampling of a number of matrices in the plant, food and cosmetic fields. Unlike PA, PEG twisters showed good performances (i.e. concentration capability) for all matrices vs. PDMS twisters taken as reference.
