Celtic coins from the Po valley are characterized by several issues, dealing with chronology, attributions, fineness and relationships within several emissions. Our research group decided to bring new data to numismatists performing time-of-flight neutron diffraction measure- ments with the INES diffractometer at the ISIS facility. This bulk technique was essential to overcome the silver surface enrichment, often occurring in ancient coins. A selection of specimens from different hoards and museums’ collections, representative of different emis- sions, has been analyzed. The results show a clear silver debasement occurring between the first and latter emissions, which allows to establish a relative chronology among them.

Abstract
Celtic coins from the Po valley are characterized by several issues, dealing with chronology, attributions, fineness and relationships within several emissions. Our research group decided to bring new data to numismatists performing time-of-flight neutron diffraction measure- ments with the INES diffractometer at the ISIS facility. This bulk technique was essential to overcome the silver surface enrichment, often occurring in ancient coins. A selection of specimens from different hoards and museums’ collections, representative of different emis- sions, has been analyzed. The results show a clear silver debasement occurring between the first and latter emissions, which allows to establish a relative chronology among them.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
